HAS ISRAEL SUFFICIENTLY PUNISHED THE OFFICERS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE USE OF WHITE PHOSPHORUS?

Israel has finally admitted to some wrongdoing in its reprimand for two of the officers in charge of the campaign in January 2009 against Hamas in Gaza. After an internal investigation in response to the Goldstone report, that said both sides may have committed war crimes, Israel has concluded that the white phosphorus munitions were used in accordance with international law. These slight punishments are unlikely to persuade those who want war crimes tribunals to relent.

Has Israel sufficiently punished the officers responsible for the use of white phosphorus?

Yes, because... It sounds like a call to the principal's office

These guards are not first graders, they should be treated like adults. And punished like adults.

A mere reprimand, seems to me,to be very lenient. And maybe both Hamas and Israel need to concentrate on their own faults instead of playing the blame-game like two noisy stubborn children in a unbreakable tussle.

Israel should mind her own business about Hamas and handle her own problems without prodding people to'look at Hamas! look what they're doing; no fair! wah'

And Hamas should equivalently forget about Israel and concentrate on her own faults/indiscretions/war-crimes.

In conclusion; The Goldstone report is not an investigation only a set of 'maybes'; the investigation is left to Israel and Hamas. Israel has done her part. maybe poorly but it's better than nothing.

Hamas is an independent organisation with Lebanese not a Country and should as such not be liable for 'war-crimes'.

Israel's war crimes in Gaza are against Palestinans. Hamas did not attack Israelis on their own soil but defended Palestinians in Palestinian territory.

Attacks on Israeli soldiers committing war-crimes; is not committing war crimes but defending the underdog.

No, because... Israel committed war crimes

The Goldstone report said that 'both' Israel and Hamas 'may' have committed war crimes.

Israel's investigation is awkwardly left to Israel(I don't make the rules), and Israeli investigators found that the phosphorous munitions were in sync with international law and gave their guards a punishment that they deemed fit.

Since the Goldstone report also states that Hamas may have committed war crimes,Hamas should take whatever action it is satiated with in punishing her war-criminals.

At least |srael has reprimanded two guards,Hamas has done nothing.

The independent report did not find that there might have been the odd rogue soldier who got it wrong. This is a clear example of scapegoating. Reports suggest more than one occurrence of inappropriate use of white phosphorus near civilians. This Israeli action relates to only one occasion and ignores the rest. Additionally the consequences for the two soldiers is minimal, nothing more than a ‘slap on the wrist.’ This in no way sends a deterrent message to other members of the Israeli armed forces, in fact the opposite. It sends the message that they will be protected if they commit war crimes, which may well be what Israel intended anyway.
